SMS Mevac awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise for International Trade
STAFF at a specialist engineering company are celebrating after being awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade.
 
SMS Mevac UK Limited, based at Winsford Industrial Estate, has been rewarded for achieving an exceptional increase in exports over the past four years.
 
The prestigious award was presented by the Lord Lieutenant for Cheshire, on behalf of the Queen, at SMS Mevac’s premises at Road Four, on Friday, July 31.
 
The Lord Lieutenant for Cheshire William Bromley-Davenport was joined by Chairman of Cheshire West and Chester Council John Ebo and Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council Cllr Mike Jones, to see SMS Mevac presented with the Queen’s Award.
 
Members of Staff were praised for their hard work which has turned a local company into an international success.
 
“This award represents the dedication of all our employees, who have worked hard over 37 years to make our company a world player.
 
“We are proud to be flying the flag for the British engineering industry,” said managing director Craig Priday.
 
SMS Mevac is jointly owned by Corus UK Ltd and SMS Siemag AG, and was formed in 1972 when the company established itself on Road Four of the Industrial Estate.
 
The company employs 34 skilled engineers, who design, supply, install and commission machines to process liquid steel and iron worldwide.
 
Since 2004 the company has exported more than £16million of equipment, which represents an increase of 169% over the period.
 
“This award gives added value to our overseas brand and will help increase export opportunities, especially in countries with strong UK links like India and Australia,” said Mr Priday.
 
The company has also developed strong links with Congleton High School, which holds an engineering specialism, to promote engineering as a career. SMS Mevac provides work placements for the school’s young apprentice scheme and support various design and technology initiatives in the school.
 
Mr Priday added: “The standard of work by students is truly outstanding. There is no doubt that the talent is there ready to lead British engineering into the 21st century.”
